Crime Trends 2024
There are two primary sources of nationwide crime data collected, summarized and made available from the FBI.
The Crime Victimization Survey is an annual survey conducted on a large representative sample and then used to project total crime victimization. It does not include homicides.
The National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) is a nation wide system to collect data on criminal incidents. It collects detailed data on victims, offenders, crimes etc.
The Victim Survey and the NIBS both indicates that violent crime was essential flat 2021 thru 2024. The Victim Survey shows a much higher count of crime in large part thought to be due to under reporting of crimes and to a lessor degree due to intricacies of the differences between the two methods and the self reporting nature of the victim survey.
One notable issue is related to simple assaults. There appears to be a dramatic increase on the number of simple assaults. However, it is not clear whether this increase in due to changes to how crimes data is captured as the FBI has transitioned from the predecessor system, Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), to the NIBRS.
