Crime - Ask the victims
There are two major sources of US crime data. The National Victimization Survey and the National Incident Based Reporting system.
The National Victimization Survey is conducted with a large representative sample of Americans and then projected to a nationwide population. It has been consistently administered over the years.
The National Incident Based Reporting system attempts to collect data from the various police organization in America. It is complicated from a very fragmented and diverse large number of police organization in the country. Not all organization participate consistently. It was further complicated in 2021 because it was a change from the Uniform Crime Reporting system that was in place prior that was less complicated to use and had a high participation rate.
The most recent complete data from both of these sources is 2022 and both of these sources show that crime trended down from 1993 through 2009 and has remained relatively flat since.
There have been recent claims from the Biden/Harris administration that they have had record low crime. Given the NIBRS data is far from complete and is complicated by inconsistent participation, that in some major cities there has been a change in the actual arrest and prosecution of crimes, and that the Victimization Survey is not available, there is an open question as to how they support their claims. Maybe we should wait to hear from victims where the Victimization Survey has not been changed.
